Goalkeeping has been a major letdown

first_imgIf Malaysia can give such a tough time to the Indian men’s hockey team, one worries about their prospects at the Commonwealth Games. If the Malaysians can get into the Indian defence so easily and frequently, it shows a weakness in midfield. If they can get into the Indian striking circle and force penalty corners, it means the defence was found wanting. But the biggest concern is the fact that Malaysia scored two goals. Bharat Chetri has to take some blame. He needs to pull up his socks as we are carrying just one goalkeeper in the squad. We have no option but to persist with him. It remains to be seen whether the team management can motivate the players when the goalkeeper is not delivering. Our attack also lacked bite and the overall strategy was found wanting.Only Shivendra Singh, Sardara Singh and Bharat Chikara were impressive in the match. It will be a very difficult match against Australia even though they have come with a lot of youngsters. From here onwards, it will not get any easier for India.I hope the performance against Malaysia was a case of first-match blues, even though I am happy that we got the three points.Against Australia, we need to make use of our home advantage and crowd support. We need to capitalise on all our chances and penalty corners, and the goalkeeper will have to put in a much better performance. The coaching staff needs to come up with an innovative strategy as the Indians seem to fumble once they reach the opposition’s 25-yard line and are confronted with a defensive wall. We need to be a lot more aggressive in the final third of the pitch.advertisementSandeep Singh is our designated drag-flicker. We have to be prepared for any eventuality. What happens if he fails to fire in a match? As far as the women are concerned, they did not have the best of starts to the tournament against Scotland. I think they were outplayed and outmuscled by the Scottish girls. It was their physical approach which prevented the Indians from playing their natural game. The match against Australia was always going to be a tough one, especially after they lost heavily to them at the recent World Cup. They now need to play up to their full potential to make it to the semi-finals.(The writer is a former India hockey coach)last_img read more

CWG: Delhi CM gives free entry to students

first_imgAfter Headlines Today highlighted poor attendance at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) venues due to the ticketing mess, the Delhi government has decided to allow free entry to school students. Headlines Today received an SMS from the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s office on Wednesday informing about the decision. The government action comes after Headlines Today highlighted how events at the Games had become a no-show due to the ticketing mess that resulted in empty stands across various venues despite the CWG organising committee’s (OC) claims that most events were completely sold out. Headlines Today asked people “who exactly is responsible for this ticket to chaos?” Surprisingly, the OC appeared as clueless as the rest giving a vague explanation for the low turnout. CWG OC vice-chairman Randhir Singh said, “It is very surprising that the tickets are sold out.
