Paddle for the Peace launches Saturday morning

first_imgAnyone wanting more information can contact Danielle Yeoman at 250-785-8510. Danielle Yeoman is the coordinator for Paddle for the Peace. She says the event is held as a way to recognize the river, as well as spread awareness as to the effect Site C would have.“It’s a celebration of the river. It’s main purpose when we started out eight years ago was to get people on the river and using it, it’s a great family event,” Yeoman explains. “Since then, Site C has become more of an issue for us. It first became an issue in the 70’s then went away for a bit. A couple of years ago, the government announced that they were going to go ahead with looking at it again, so now the Paddle for the Peace has become an event that supports the opposition of the dam.”Yeoman pointed to the loss of agricultural land, and not being able to paddle on the river as only a couple of problems if the building of the dam were to go through.- Advertisement -A number of events are planned for Saturday aside from the paddle itself. Yeoman says food will be served and people will have a chance to express their thoughts on the river.“From 9 until 11, there’s registration and a pancake breakfast by West Moberly First Nations,” she says. “At Bear Flat, Halfway First Nations is going to have a barbecue there, and Treaty 8 is having an open mic celebration, so there will be fun and activities at both ends.” Registration, breakfast and entertainment gets underway at 9 a.m. and runs until 11 a.m.Advertisementlast_img read more
