first_imgDietmar Hamann believes England defender John Stones can follow in the footsteps of former Three Lions captain Rio Ferdinand and develop into a top class centre-half.Everton starlet Stones has impressed in his short time in the Premier League and has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea this summer. The Blues have had three bids rejected by the Merseysiders already, but are confident of landing the 21-year-old in a mega £40million deal before the transfer window shuts after he handed in a transfer request on Tuesday.Ferdinand also went for big money at a young age, moving from Leeds United to Manchester United in 2002 for £31million at 24-years-old.Many eyebrows were raised at United paying such a hefty price, but the fee was soon forgotten as Ferdinand developed into one of the world’s leading centre-backs.And former German international Hamann believes Stones has the quality to emulate the Three Lions great.“John Stones is a huge talent, a tremendous player and I love watching him,” he told Colin Murray.“He reminds me of Rio Ferdinand when he started at West Ham and went to Leeds. He’s effortless on the ball, he’s got a good eye, good technique, he’s strong and quick. He looks the real deal.”When asked if he can be as good as Ferdinand, Hamann replied: “Of course he can, there’s no reason to believe he can’t.“If he goes to Chelsea he may improve and develop a bit quicker because he will play with better players, play against better players and play in the Champions League.”The former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder added: “£40million may look like a lot of money, but it’s just the market at the moment. If the TV deals over the next two or so years go up as they did this season, you could have a bargain.”last_img
