New Apostolic Church Members Decry Injustice, Lack of Accountability

first_imgElder Anthony Armah (pictured), who has spent decades with the church, said for about 16 years now, only Apostles, Bishops, and their supporters have been paid salaries and given benefits from offerings and other money generated by the church.A group under the banner of ‘a new day has come’ from the New Apostolic Church in Liberia, with headquarters on Mechlin and Front Street in Monrovia has decried injustice and lack of accountability by the Apostle Alexander Wreh and his deputy Evangelist Samuel M. Hayfrom for the past 16 years.Elder Anthony J. K. Armah, head of the group, alleged that District Evangelist Hayfrom has ruled the church for the last 16 years performing alone as the ‘manager, accountant, paymaster, logistic and procurement officer, data clerk and warehouse keeper in a church with about 10,000 members.According to elder Armah, Evangelist Hayfrom alone makes administrative decisions and gives meager cash to ministers or pastors as transportation fare to collect offering, tithes, and October Thanksgiving Offering.“There is no financial report of the church from Apostle Wreh and Evangelist Hayfrom for decades. We don’t know what the money generated in the church is being used for. As a church, we need to know on a yearly basis how much is generated and how was it used,” Armah said.He also frowned on why only Europeans are given the opportunity to occupy the office of the Chief Apostle, leaving out Africans, Americans, Asians, and Indians.Elder Armah, who has spent decades with the church, said for about 16 years now, only Apostles, Bishops, and their supporters have been paid salaries and given benefits from offerings and other money generated by the church.“This cash that he pays was designed since 2000; meaning if the transportation fare was L$150 from Voinjama to Foya; the church is still paying, in 2019, the same amount to ministers. He buys and sells alone for the church,” Elder Armah claimed. He said the financial situation of the church has been in secret with no report to its members, a situation that many of them have frowned on for years.Elder Armah said at present, uniforms, bicycles or motorbikes that are provided to help ministers to do evangelical work are no longer forthcoming, and no alternatives. “He is only conducting seminars with few selected persons and for some years, no seminars have been held in many congregations. However, Elder Armah remains thankful to God for the opportunity to establish 37 congregations in Lofa with 27 active, which brings L$80,000 to L$100,000 as offerings on a quarterly basis to the church’s central administration. He said while taking care of the members’ souls remains cardinal, their physical bodies also deserve to be properly taken care of by the church through money generated from their members.According to Elder Armah, Apostle Wreh and Evangelist Hayfrom continue to use funds from the church to enrich themselves at the detriment of the members.“When we grumble Evangelist Hayfrom, he often says we are envious and jealous of him, because he is educated.“Women in the church have not been given key positions, a situation that affects the church in recruiting more members. In response, Evangelist Samuel Hayfrom did not deny or confirm the allegations, but said, “We will come to the media if need be. We have decided to sit as a family and talk about all these allegations.”Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Soccer: the people’s passion

first_img20 May 2004One of the first gifts that democracy brought South Africa was its first truly representative national soccer team. That team’s nickname soon became known worldwide when Bafana Bafana – “The Boys” – captured the African Cup of Nations on home soil in 1996.It was a great achievement, and as the entire country had celebrated South Africa’s Rugby World Cup triumph the year before, so the entire country celebrated the success of the national soccer side. The most popular game in the country had for so long belonged to its quiet majority; democracy brought its joys to the whole population. The fierce traditional rivalry of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs – truly one of the biggest derby matches in the world – became something for all to share in.Players and their amazing nicknames became known everywhere: men like Thomas “Who’s Fooling Who” Hlongwane, “Professor” Ngubane, Pule “Ace” Ntsoelengoe, and Nelson “Teenage” Dladla.Greater exposure for South African soccer meant greater interest from sponsors and better support for the game, and that helped improve the country’s standard of play. Early on, though, it was a steep learning curve as the price of isolation was shown in a number of defeats, some of them big, against opponents many supporters would have expected South Africa to beat.PassionOne of the things that open society brought to previously advantaged white South Africans was the incredible passion black people had for soccer. It showed in their support for their favourite teams, in the astounding skills they displayed while fooling around with a soccer ball about. It helped humanise black people in the minds of many whites brought up on a regular diet of apartheid propaganda. In the past, some of the country’s greatest players had had to make their mark far away from home, with little known about their exploits until much later: players such as Steve Mokone, Pule Ntsoelengoe, Jomo Sono and Kaizer Motaung.Sono and Motaung returned to start clubs that remain pillars of the present Premier Soccer League in South Africa: Jomo Cosmos (named after the New York Cosmos for whom Sono played), and Kaizer Chiefs, the most popular soccer team in South Africa.Making it in EuropeToday, the opportunity exists for any outstanding soccer player to make his mark on the rich playing fields of Europe. England is a popular destination, but SA’s soccer exports have also made their mark in Germany, Spain, Portugal and Russia.A year before Bafana Bafana’s success in the 1996 African Cup of Nations, Orlando Pirates showed what the addition of South Africa to the international ranks meant when they broke North Africa’s stranglehold on African club competition. The Buccaneers became the first club south of the equator to win the African Club of Champions competition – at their first attempt – and followed that up with the African Super Cup in 1996.In recent years, players like Lucas Radebe (Leeds United), Benni McCarthy (Porto), Shaun Bartlett (Charlton Athletic), Mark Fish (Charlton Athletic), Mbulelo Mabizela (Tottenham Hotspur) and Steven Pienaar (Ajax Amsterdam) have achieved success in Europe, while Russia has almost become a second home for South African players. States are Amending, then Adopting, the 2015 IECC

Lots of people are confused about building codes.Anyone interested in understanding building codes in the U.S. needs to start by learning a few basic facts:The ICC codes that are most relevant to residential builders are the International Residential Code (IRC) and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). These codes are written in three-year cycles, which means that every three years, a new version of the code is published. That’s why builders and code officials refer to the 2009 IRC, the 2012 IRC, or the 2015 IRC.When states adopt a building code, they can adopt any version they want, and they are under no obligation to update the code when a new version of a model code is published. (There are a few exceptions to this rule: in some states, legislation has been passed to require automatic adoption of updated codes.) State-to-state variations are common; for example, Wisconsin is using the 2009 code while Iowa is using the 2012 code and Illinois is using the 2015 code — all at the same time.In recent months, some states have begun to adopt versions of the latest edition of the IECC, namely the 2015 IECC. States that have done so include llinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Utah, and Vermont. A HERS Index can be a path to compliance GBA has published several articles on the 2015 IECC, including the following:As these articles explain, one of the new compliance paths available to builders under the 2015 IECC involves getting a HERS Index for a new home. (The code refers to this rating as the Energy Rating Index, or ERI; but for all intents and purposes, an ERI is the same as a… last_img read more

Long DescriptionPixabay[Bullying Black and White by Anemone123 on May 9, 2017, CC0]Bullying is an ongoing problem that impacts children and youth on a daily basis. According to the CDC, 1 in 5 high school students reported being bullied on school property in the last year and bullying is also the most commonly reported discipline problem in public schools [1].What can we do to help turn the tide of bullying behaviors? First, we must be aware of the different types of bullying. Bullying is not always physical and includes verbal bullying like name-calling and teasing. There is social bullying that involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships like spreading rumors and embarrassing someone in public [2]. Also, cyber-bullying falls into the realm of social bullying.Second, finding great resources can be beneficial that can provide strategies to stop bullying in its tracks. Stop Bullying.gov is fantastic resource that provides trainings and prevention techniques for service professionals, parents, and teachers. Most of their strategies focus on collaboration between mental health professionals, parents, and the school system to engage the larger community on bullying prevention. One great resource on how kids can implement change in their own schools is the book “Shield Up!: How Upstanding Bystanders Stop Bullying” by Marcella Marino Craver [3]. Illustrated as a graphic novel, this book is an example of how bullying can happen and how it effects individual kids and their peer groups. The ultimate takeaway is what to do when bullying behaviors happen and how kind actions can change those behaviors. The book also includes a reader’s note where you can learn strategies for standing up to bullying behavior and how to practice kindness. It is important to understand the impact that violence such as bullying, teen dating violence, and school shootings have on youth. Be sure to watch this archived MFLN FD webinar from last year entitled “Polishing Our Protective Shields: Exploring Ways to Protect Youth from Violence.” CEU opportunities are still available.References[1]  Center for Disease Control (2018).
