Renewables a better option than nuclear, French environment agency says

first_imgRenewables a better option than nuclear, French environment agency says FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Bloomberg:France will save 39 billion euros ($44.5 billion) if it refrains from building 15 new nuclear plants by 2060, and bets instead on renewable energy sources to replace its all its aging atomic facilities, a government agency said.France should spend 1.28 trillion euros over the next four decades, mostly on clean power production and storage capacities, networks, and imports, according to a report from the country’s environment ministry. If it does this, France would progressively shut down its 58 atomic plants and renewable energy would comprise 95 percent of its electricity output by 2060, up from 17 percent last year. The development of the so-called EPR nuclear reactors “wouldn’t be competitive for the French power system from an economic standpoint,” the Agence de l’Environnement et de la Maitrise de l’Energie –or Ademe– said in a statement. The report assumes that the reactors would produce electricity at a cost of 70 euros per megawatt-hour, while the cost of wind and solar power would fall much lower. The report follows President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that state-controlled Electricite de France SA will have to shut as many as 14 of its 58 nuclear reactors by 2035 to allow renewable energy to expand the country’s power mix. Macron also gave EDF until mid-2021 to prove that it can build an economically-viable reactor before the country decides to build new atomic plants. EDF’s EPR project in Normandy is more than six years late coming online, and the cost has more than tripled from its original budget.Falling costs means that photovoltaic facilities won’t need subsidies from 2030, nor will onshore wind from 2035, the report said. That’s assuming that EDF halts 30 percent of its reactors after 40 years of operation and an additional 30 percent when they turn 50. Otherwise, surplus production capacity would undermine the economics of both nuclear power and renewables, Ademe said.More: France would save $44.5 billion by betting on renewable energy, agency sayslast_img read more

Blind calls for focus

first_img The 25-year-old Dutchman, who has played a significant role in United’s run of six consecutive wins, accepted rivals would have taken note of the 4-2 derby win over Manchester City on Sunday. He insisted, however, that although United could win the title next year, they had to focus on securing a Champions League place – starting against Chelsea on Saturday. Blind said: “I think Manchester United is always a club that is fighting for the title. “Of course other teams are watching us, but we have to watch ourselves this season, our own games, focus on that and then we will see where it ends “We don’t have to watch for Chelsea. We have to watch for our own games, we have to look at ourselves. Every game is a final to the end and we have to believe in ourselves.” Blind credited a pre-match team talk from skipper Wayne Rooney about ending their run of four successive losses against City with giving the United players an extra edge on Sunday. He added: “It was a thing that was always in our minds. It was going through the team. Everyone knew how important this game was, not only because it’s a rat race in the last games, but also because of the history of the last four games. “Wayne Rooney mentioned that in the dressing room before the game to all the players and it is something that you have in mind when you go on to the pitch. You saw how everyone was fighting for each other. “Maybe after the first five minutes we were a bit like, ‘What is happening here?’ but after that we picked it up again and we did very well. And with the crowd behind us, it was amazing.” Press Associationcenter_img Daley Blind has warned that Manchester United need to focus on the end of this season rather than thinking about challenging for the Premier League title next year. last_img read more

The Lackey Geocoin: An Unexpected 26,000-mile, 5-Year Journey

first_imgBy Holly Walker, Geocaching HQ Guest Experience CoordinatorThere’s the “you” when you begin a journey, then if by magic, there’s a completely different “you” when you finish a journey. As geocachers, we’ve all experienced this phenomenon. You learn and you grow and you change, even if ever so slightly, into a new person. And so it’s the same as we vicariously travel through Geocaching game pieces known as Travel Bugs®. We’re able to track an object as it moves around the world to new places. And sometimes when we see that Travel Bug, years later, the whole world we know has changed. This is one of those stories. On February 7, 2010, Arkfiremedic placed a 2009 Groundspeak Lackey Geocoin in a Travel Bug hotel in Arkansas. The mission? “Try to make it back to Groundspeak Headquarters [in Seattle, WA] from Arkansas.” Lackey Geocoins are limited edition items annually released by Geocaching Headquarters. Commemorating its employees, or Lackeys as they we occasionally (and lovingly) referred to by the community, these Geocoins feature each Lackey’s unique pixel icon, an artistic characterization of each person and a rite of passage when hired. (You can see that latest Geocaching HQ Logbook Geocoin or Lackey Geocoin here.)What could have been a simple 2,000 mile trip from Arkansas to Geocaching HQ across the country became, in the end, much more. This 2009 Geocoin, featuring just under 30 Geocaching Lackeys, spent nearly five years traveling to eleven different US states, visiting three countries across three continents, and logging over 26,000 miles all in an effort to visit us. To the delight of the coin’s owner, this lackey geocoin reached its final destination a couple weeks ago. On January 5, 2015, the coin finally arrived at Geocaching Headquarters and met a staff of over 80 lackeys! My how things have changed here at headquarters in the last 5 years!Shortly after arriving, the Geocoin was discovered and photographed by the Lackeys and quickly retrieved that afternoon by a kind geocacher visiting HQ. Wondering where the coin is headed next? “The coin would love to come back to sunny Arkansas to retire the rest of its days in its owner’s collections.” And off it went back into the world…This is just one of the many awesome trackable stories we encounter each day at our office. You’re invited to join. Schedule a hosted visit with us the next time you find yourself in Seattle. Discover all the interesting trackables our geocache contains and pick up your own Lackey Geocoin. Or activate a trackable from home and send it our way to travel the world for you. Who knows what kinds of adventures it may have.“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” – Ernest HemingwayHolly in the Geocaching HQ lobby SharePrint RelatedThe Center of the Trackable UniverseSeptember 15, 2011In “Community”Geocaching Headquarters (GCK25B): Been There, Logged That.July 9, 2014In “Community”Visit Geocaching HQOctober 28, 2019In “Community” Share with your Friends:Morelast_img read more

Facebook Tests Auto-Play Mobile Video, Softening You Up For Commercials

first_imgselena larson Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Facebook is testing a new way to push auto-playing video at its mobile users, a precursor to its all-but-inevitable introduction of video advertising. Videos embedded in Facebook NewsFeeds will now play automatically, but silently, as smartphone or tablet users scroll by. Clicking on the video will enlarge it and play audio. The test is currently limited to what Facebook calls a “small group of U.S. mobile users.”Only videos posted by individual Facebook users, including those from Instagram and similar applications, will play automatically. Links shared from YouTube, Vimeo and other outside services won’t play in line.Teeing Up AdvertisingThe initial test also won’t include advertisements. But Facebook notes in its blog post that “[o]ver time, we’ll continue to explore how to bring this to marketers in the future.”  In other words, auto-play mobile video does indeed look like a way to accustom users to auto-video so that when advertisements appear, people will be more inclined to watch them.See also: Instagram Video Spells A Billion Dollars Worth Of Magic For FacebookEarlier this week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that mobile users spend one-fifth of their total time on mobile devices using Facebook, adding that Facebook derives more than 40 percent of its revenue from mobile. Mobile video advertising would be an obvious way to mint some additional coin from that trend.More Video, More DataUsers, however, might not be happy with the auto play feature. Auto-playing video will presumably drive up mobile data usage, which could be a problem for people on capped data plans. There’s a big difference between taking the data hit to watch a friend’s cat video and finding yourself subjected willy-nilly to a skateboard video shot an acquaintance’s son—much less eventual toothpaste or car commercials. Antonio Conte wants Chelsea’s great season to become ‘fantastic’

first_imgChelsea manager Antonio Conte celebrated with his team’s fans at the end of a crucial 3-0 win at Everton on Sunday but then quickly warned that plenty of work remained to be done for his side to clinch the Premier League title.A beautiful, long-range strike from Pedro, a Gary Cahill tap-in and a neatly worked goal from substitute Willian secured three points in the trickiest test in Chelsea’s title run-in.While aware of the significance of the victory, the Italian manager, in his first season in the Premier League, remained wary of counting his chickens.”At this part of the season every win is a great win for us. Before this game there were five games to go. Now there are four games to go. For us every win is a great win and for this reason we must celebrate in the right way, with my players with the staff, with our fans.We have to have great enthusiasm and great patience because I think we are having a great season but for it to become a fantastic season we must win,” he told reporters. That ‘fantastic season’ could yet become a repeat of the club’s double – Premier League and FA Cup – triumph in 2010 with Conte’s team facing Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 27.Everton was expected to be the toughest game in Chelsea’s run-in. Ronald Koeman’s team had lost only one game at Goodison before Sunday and had won their last eight in a row but after a tight first half Chelsea ran out comfortable winners.advertisement”For sure today is a great result for us. To win away against Everton is not easy but I think we have to continue in this way and to go step by step and game by game and take three points every game until the end,” Conte said.”Now it is very important after this crucial week for us, we played against Tottenham for the final in the FA Cup and then on Tuesday against Southampton and now against Everton. I think we finished a crucial week very well. We all know there is this part of the season that is the most important.”Now it is important for us to prepare the right way (for) the next game. If we don’t win against Middlesbrough (on May 8) you lose this great win,” he said. The always emotional Conte said that his post-game interaction with his team had been physical rather than verbal.”The message was only great hugs and great enthusiasm, great passion,” he said.last_img read more
